The Clinton LumberKings (Seattle Mariners affiliate) of Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League staged an amazing comeback against the Burlington Bees (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim affiliate) last night. The Bees scored 9 runs in the home half of the fifth inning to pad their lead to 17-1 after five innings of play.
The LumberKings didn’t just roll over though, scoring 16 runs in the next four innings to send the game into extra innings. In the 12th they took the lead for the first time all night and shut down the Bees in the bottom of the 12th to claim the win.
Interestingly, the story in Sports Illustrated took the negative approach with this headline, ” Angels’ minor league team blows 17-1 lead to Mariners affiliate, loses 20-17.” While the Angels certainly were unable to hold onto what would usually be an insurmountable lead it wouldn’t hurt to give the LumberKings the credit for not giving up and pulling out a great win. That is part of the problem with our society today, always gleeful in dumping on someone rather than giving credit for a job well done.
