Eleanor Clift a true liberal’s liberal made a comment the was as laughable as it was despicable. In her usual roll as defender of all things liberal on The McLaughlin Group the Daily Beast columnist said U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens wasn’t murdered , “I’d like to point out that Ambassador Stevens was not ‘murdered,’ but died of smoke inhalation in a CIA safe room.” When given the chance to explain and perhaps, walk it back as they say, she stood her ground maintaining that she took issue with the glib use of the word murder. She has a high opinion of her reasoning ability adding she was trying to “add a bit of complexity”.
Benghazigate continues to have few answers even though President Obama proclaimed no one wanted answers more than he and promised to get to the bottom of what happened. As usual what has happened since then is mostly stonewalling and blaming Republicans for making Benghazi a political issue.
The comments of Ms. Clift should be cringe inducing to any fair-minded American but if you do a GOOGLE search on the topic, guess what you get. Pages of conservative sites, publications and organizations pointing out the crass stupidity shown by Ms. Clift in defense of the Administration she supports. It is a problem shared by those of us on the right, we often aren’t interested in pointing out conservatives who say something outrageous. But you will be a very elderly person indeed waiting for the main-stream media to point out Ms. Clift’s mental gymnastics trying to give cover for the failure of the American government to take any action to intervene in the attack and then rush into full cover-up mode in the aftermath .
I try to stay away from name calling and the like, but it is extremely difficult to remain civil towards those who will go to outrageous lengths to dissemble and muddy the waters. It is Ms. Clift’s opinion and she is free to share it and as she predicted, she would be vilified by those on the right. That she hasn’t also been called on to maybe rethink her ideas by those on her side of the political spectrum is understood but not to be .
Unfortunately on the McLaughlin show the conservative response played to Ms. Clift’s position. Susan Ferrechio of the Washington Examiner challenging Ms. Clift’s assertion that Ambassador Stevens died of smoke inhalation saying, “I don’t think that’s a fact Eleanor”. Ms. Clift responded, “I think it is a fact.” Ms. Clift can win on that point, if the autopsy shows that to be the case. But for crying out loud Ms. Clift why was he inhaling smoke? Simple, because of the embassy was under attack by people, none of whom, by the way were nattering on about some video.
I like to say Think, Then Think Again. I don’t think it is going to help with Ms. Clift.
