Congressman Paul Gosar (R-AZ) has introduced a bill in the House that would require members of Congress to fly coach instead of first class. Congressman Gosar says the intent of the bill is to cut waste, fraud and abuse. Adding if members of our military can’t fly first-class using taxpayer funds, then neither should members of congress.
I doubt passing the bill would actually save any money, each congressperson receives and would continue to receive a base travel budget of just over $250,000 but at least they would have to use their frequent flyer miles or pay themselves to upgrade to business or first class.
For decades, at least, congress has passed legislation regulating how Americans live but there is usually an exception for congress and congressional staffers. They have found a way to live a little better, a little freer than we private citizens. They have very important work to do. Unlike us. They are just too important to be cramped into small seats with no leg room, don’t you understand they are members of congress.
The Presidential air craft is understandable. Providing for the Presidents safe and secure travel makes sense. But it has spread over the years. The Vice-President needs a plane. Then the Speaker Of The House became too important to fly commercially, starting I believe with Speaker Dennis Hastert, the Speaker has had an Air Force plane at their disposal. Certainly very nice, but no, you aren’t all that. Our elected officials need to remember that they really are just like the rest of us. It isn’t as if the rigors of flying coach on commercial flights would be such a burden the quality of their work would suffer. Hard to imagine that being possible. Maybe a little cheek to jowl time with us commoners would do them some good, who knows?
